Updating a theme
Theme updates include Ghost compatibility improvements, performance refinements, and bug fixes. Use the latest version available for your Ghost installation.
If you edited theme files directly, uploading a new version will overwrite those customizations.Step-by-Step
- Download the latest version of the theme, then unzip the archive locally.
- Choose a theme version that is compatible with your Ghost version.
- Go to the 'Theme' settings in the Ghost Admin and click the 'Change theme' button.
- Click the 'Upload theme' button in the upper-right corner.
- After the upload finishes, click 'Activate' to use the theme on your site.
If you edited theme files, make a note of the files and changes before updating. After uploading the new version, you will need to apply those edits again.
A file comparison tool such as Sublime Merge ↗ can help you find and reapply custom changes.
Tip: Why did my Design & branding settings reset after upload?Use the same ZIP filename for each update, for example theme-name.zip. This helps Ghost keep the existing Design & branding settings for that theme.
Ghost stores Design & branding settings by uploaded archive name. If you uploadtheme-v1.zipand latertheme-v2.zip, Ghost treats them as separate themes and the settings will not carry over.
